AIA Health Insurance Review NZ 2026 — Plans, Prices & Claims

Updated

AIA is one of Asia-Pacific’s largest insurance groups, and in New Zealand it’s known for combining health and life insurance with its AIA Vitality wellness rewards programme. It sells primarily through financial advisers.

About AIA

  • Type: Subsidiary of AIA Group (listed on Hong Kong Stock Exchange)
  • NZ presence: Strong — sells health, life, income protection, and trauma through advisers
  • Key differentiator: AIA Vitality wellness programme

Plans Overview

AIA Assure

AIA’s core health insurance product covers:

  • Private hospital surgical treatment
  • Specialist consultations
  • Diagnostics
  • Cancer treatment
  • Physiotherapy (post-surgery)
  • Mental health cover

AIA Assure is modular — you build your cover from components rather than choosing a fixed plan tier. This means you can customise what’s included and adjust limits.

AIA Vitality (add-on)

AIA Vitality is a wellness programme that rewards healthy behaviours with premium discounts and other perks:

  • Complete health assessments, exercise, and other activities to earn Vitality points
  • Points translate to premium discounts (up to 25% in some cases)
  • Additional rewards: discounts at gyms, Airpoints Dollars, retail vouchers

This is a meaningful benefit if you’re engaged with it. People who actively participate can substantially reduce their premiums over time. Those who don’t engage get no benefit.

What AIA Does Well

Modular structure: The ability to customise your cover means you pay for what you actually need. Useful for people with specific cover requirements.

Vitality programme: If you’re health-conscious and engaged, the premium discounts can be substantial. AIA Vitality is unique in the NZ market in this regard.

Combined with life insurance: AIA is strong across life, health, income protection, and trauma — advisers can structure a coordinated insurance package from one provider.

Cancer cover: Strong cancer cover included in core plans.

Claims reputation: Generally well-regarded, particularly through advisers who manage the claims process on behalf of clients.

What to Watch Out For

Adviser-only distribution: AIA health insurance is not sold direct — you need to go through a licensed adviser. This is a benefit (advisers manage your policy and claims) but means you can’t get an online quote without engaging an adviser first.

Vitality complexity: The Vitality programme requires active engagement. If you’re not going to track activities, do health assessments, and earn points — the programme doesn’t benefit you and adds complexity.

Pricing: AIA is generally priced at the premium end of the market. The Vitality discounts can offset this — but only if you participate.

Pre-existing conditions: Standard NZ exclusion rules apply.
