KiwiSaver fees are deducted from your balance automatically — most members never see them as a line item. But they compound against you just as powerfully as returns compound for you. Over a 30-year career, the difference between a 1% fee and a 0.3% fee is not small.
The Real Cost of KiwiSaver Fees
On a $100,000 balance, 1% in annual fees costs $1,000/year. But because that $1,000 isn’t invested, it also forfeits its own future returns. Over 20 years at 7% returns:
| Balance | Annual fee | Cost over 20 years (forfeited returns included) |
|---|---|---|
| $100,000 | 0.3% | ~$8,500 |
| $100,000 | 0.7% | ~$19,500 |
| $100,000 | 1.0% | ~$27,500 |
| $100,000 | 1.5% | ~$40,000 |
Illustrative — based on 7% gross return, fees deducted annually, 20-year horizon.
At $300,000 (a realistic balance for a median earner at 55), the fee difference between 0.3% and 1.0% over 10 remaining years is roughly $60,000+.
Types of KiwiSaver Fees
Most providers charge fees in one or more of these forms:
- Annual fund charge (%) — the main fee; expressed as a percentage of your balance, deducted daily from the unit value
- Administration / member fee ($) — a fixed dollar fee per year (e.g. $12–$36); significant for small balances, negligible for large ones
- Performance fee (%) — some active managers (Milford, Fisher Funds) charge a fee on returns above a benchmark; not charged in down years
The annual fund charge is by far the most impactful for most members.
