KiwiSaver Number NZ — How to Find Your KiwiSaver Number

Updated

There is no single universal “KiwiSaver number” — but there are several reference numbers associated with your KiwiSaver account. Here’s what each is and where to find them.

Your IRD Number — The Master KiwiSaver Reference

The primary number linking you to KiwiSaver is your IRD number — a unique 8- or 9-digit number issued to you by Inland Revenue.

Your IRD number is how IRD identifies your KiwiSaver membership, processes contributions from your employer, and pays the Member Tax Credit. Your provider also uses it to verify your identity.

How to find your IRD number:

  • Check any IRD correspondence (letters, tax summaries)
  • Log in to myIR (myir.ird.govt.nz) — your IRD number appears in your profile
  • Check your payslip — your employer may list it
  • Check a previous tax return (IR3 or income summary)
  • If you’ve lost it: call IRD on 0800 227 774 with your details

Your Provider Member Number

In addition to your IRD number, your KiwiSaver provider assigns you a member number or account number specific to their system. This is used when contacting your provider directly.

How to find it:

  • Log in to your provider’s online portal or app — it appears in your account details
  • Check your annual KiwiSaver statement (posted or emailed to you each year)
  • Call your provider’s customer service line — they can look up your account with your name, date of birth, and IRD number

Which Provider Are You With?

If you’ve lost track of which provider holds your KiwiSaver:

  1. Log in to myIR at myir.ird.govt.nz
  2. Select “KiwiSaver” from the menu
  3. Your current provider is shown, along with your enrolment date and balance estimate

This is the fastest way to locate your account if you’re unsure.

How to Find KiwiSaver If You Were Auto-Enrolled

If you were automatically enrolled when you started a job and never made active choices, you may have been assigned to a default provider. Log in to myIR to identify which of the nine default providers holds your account.

See KiwiSaver default fund explained for more.

KiwiSaver and Your IRD Number — When You Need It

You’ll typically be asked for your IRD number when:

  • Enrolling in KiwiSaver with a provider
  • Completing a KiwiSaver application form (first home withdrawal, savings suspension, rate change)
  • Switching providers — both old and new provider require it
  • Making a voluntary contribution via bank transfer (some providers use it as the payment reference)

What If You Have Multiple KiwiSaver Accounts?

You can only be an active member of one KiwiSaver scheme at a time. However, historically some members ended up with accounts in more than one fund (from changing jobs without properly managing the switch). If you suspect you have duplicate accounts:

  1. Check myIR — it will list your current registered provider
  2. Contact any other providers you remember joining
  3. Arrange a transfer to consolidate into a single account
