Thousands of New Zealanders have KiwiSaver accounts they’ve forgotten about — often from early auto-enrolment, job changes, or moving overseas. Here’s how to trace a lost account and what to do with it.
Common Reasons for a Lost KiwiSaver Account
- Auto-enrolled at a first job years ago and lost track of the provider
- Changed jobs several times and are unsure which employer’s contributions went where
- Returned from overseas and can’t recall your provider
- Inherited what may be a deceased family member’s KiwiSaver
- Young — enrolled as a newborn or child but can’t remember the account details
Step 1: Check myIR
The fastest way to find your KiwiSaver is through myIR (myir.ird.govt.nz):
- Log in with your IRD number and password (or register if you haven’t before)
- Navigate to the “KiwiSaver” section
- Your current registered provider and account balance are listed here
myIR holds IRD’s central record of your KiwiSaver membership. Even if you’ve never logged in before, your account details are linked to your IRD number.
Step 2: Contact IRD Directly
If you can’t access myIR, call IRD’s KiwiSaver line:
Phone: 0800 549 944
Have your IRD number ready. IRD can tell you which provider holds your account and provide contact details.
Step 3: Contact Potential Providers Directly
If you remember starting a job around a certain time period and being enrolled, but don’t know the provider:
- Your employer at the time would have enrolled you — contact their HR/payroll team if you can
- Or call providers from the list of 9 default providers (ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Westpac, Booster, Fisher Funds, Milford, Generate, SuperLife) — one of them may have your account
- Check your email history for any KiwiSaver account setup confirmations
Unclaimed KiwiSaver Balances
KiwiSaver accounts that receive no contributions for a long time are not automatically closed or transferred — they remain with the provider. The balance continues to be invested, and fees may continue to be charged.
If you find an old account with a small balance and high fees, it may have been eroded over time. Checking your balance and either consolidating or resuming contributions is important.
IRD’s Unclaimed Money Register
IRD maintains an unclaimed money register for funds that have been transferred from providers who cannot locate the account holder. If an account has been inactive for a long time and the provider cannot contact you, the balance may eventually be transferred to IRD’s unclaimed money register.

Consolidating Multiple Accounts
If you find you have accounts with more than one provider (possible if you changed jobs and were re-enrolled), you should consolidate. You can only be an active member of one KiwiSaver scheme.
To consolidate:
- Decide which provider you want to keep
- Enrol with that provider (if you’re not already)
- Request a transfer of your old account balance to the new provider — the new provider handles this
- The old account is closed once the transfer is complete
Transfer takes 10–15 business days.
Checking a Deceased Person’s KiwiSaver
If you’re looking for a deceased family member’s KiwiSaver account:
- Contact IRD (as the estate administrator or legal representative) — they can identify the provider
- The balance forms part of the estate and is claimed through the estate process
See KiwiSaver death benefit NZ for the full process.
