How to Use myIR — NZ Inland Revenue Online Account Guide 2026

Updated

myIR is Inland Revenue’s online portal where you manage your tax affairs — view tax assessments, file returns, make payments, update your details, and communicate with IRD. This guide covers how to set up and use myIR effectively.

Quick answer

Go to ird.govt.nz and click "Log in to myIR". Create an account with your IRD number, date of birth, and a valid email. Once in, you can view income tax, GST, KiwiSaver, and student loan details; respond to automatic tax assessments; file IR3 returns; and make payments. Set up a direct debit for automatic GST and income tax payments.

Setting Up Your myIR Account

If you do not have a myIR account:

  1. Go to ird.govt.nz
  2. Click Log in to myIR
  3. Click Create account
  4. Enter your IRD number, date of birth, and current address
  5. Verify your identity with a valid email address and/or phone number
  6. Set up a secure password and two-factor authentication (recommended)

You will need your IRD number. Find it on letters from IRD, payslips, or your KiwiSaver statement.

Once logged in, you will see your tax accounts:

Key Tasks in myIR

Responding to an Automatic Assessment

From May to July each year, IRD sends most PAYE earners an automatic assessment — a pre-filled income tax calculation. You will get a notification in myIR.

To review:

  1. Go to Income taxTax assessments
  2. Open the assessment for the relevant tax year
  3. Review your income sources and tax withheld
  4. If correct: click Confirm (or do nothing — IRD auto-confirms after a deadline)
  5. If incorrect: click I want to update/dispute this assessment and enter corrections

Filing an IR3 Return

If you need to file an IR3 (self-employed, rental income, overseas income, etc.):

  1. Go to Income taxFile a return
  2. Select the relevant tax year
  3. Work through the income and deductions sections
  4. Add any tax credits (IETC, donations, etc.)
  5. Submit and note the confirmation number

Making a Payment

  1. Go to the relevant tax account (income tax, GST, etc.)
  2. Click Make a payment
  3. Options: credit/debit card, internet banking (bank account details provided), or direct debit

Bank transfer details:

  • IRD provides bank account numbers for each tax type
  • Use your IRD number as the payment reference (always — without it, IRD cannot allocate the payment)
  • Include a payment type code (e.g., INC for income tax, GST for goods and services tax)

Updating Your Personal Details

  1. Go to ProfileUpdate details
  2. Update: address, bank account for refunds, contact email, phone number
  3. Ensure your bank account is correct — IRD sends refunds to the account you specify in myIR

Setting Up Refund Bank Account

To receive refunds directly to your bank account:

  1. Go to ProfileBank accounts
  2. Add or update your bank account number
  3. IRD will verify the account before processing refunds

Without a bank account on file, refunds are sent by cheque (takes longer and requires manual banking).

Security Tips

  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) — myIR supports this
  • Never share your myIR login details
  • Log out after each session, especially on shared computers
  • If you suspect unauthorised access, change your password immediately and contact IRD: 0800 775 247
