How NZ Broadband Infrastructure Works
Understanding the infrastructure helps explain why all providers offer the same speeds — and why price is the main differentiator for most urban customers.
Chorus (the main fibre network)
Chorus is NZ’s wholesale-only fibre network operator. They built and operate the Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFB) network connecting approximately 87% of NZ homes to fibre. Chorus does not sell directly to residential customers — they wholesale the network to retail providers.
Other Local Fibre Companies (LFCs)
In some regions, alternative fibre networks operate alongside or instead of Chorus:
- Enable — Christchurch city and some Canterbury towns
- Northpower Fibre — Whangarei area
- Tuatahi Net — Waikato rural towns (Te Awamutu, Morrinsville, etc.)
Most retail providers offer plans on all LFC networks, not just Chorus.
Retail Service Providers (RSPs)
Spark, One NZ, 2degrees, Skinny, Voyager, BigPipe, Orcon, and all the other brands you see advertised are RSPs — they buy capacity from Chorus/LFCs and sell it to consumers. The physical fibre connection to your home is identical regardless of which RSP you use.
Fibre Speed Tiers Available in NZ (2026)
| Plan tier | Download speed | Upload speed | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fibre Starter / Basic | 100–200 Mbps | 20 Mbps | $65–$75/month |
| Fibre 300 (standard) | 300 Mbps | 100 Mbps | $65–$80/month |
| Fibre 900 (fast) | 900 Mbps | 400–500 Mbps | $85–$110/month |
| Hyperfibre 2000 | 2,000 Mbps | 2,000 Mbps | $120–$150/month |
| Hyperfibre 4000 | 4,000 Mbps | 4,000 Mbps | $150–$200/month |
Most households (even heavy users) are well-served by Fibre 300. The higher tiers are mainly relevant for households with multiple people streaming 4K simultaneously, working from home with heavy upload needs, or content creators.
