New Zealand has three mobile networks, and unlike broadband (where all providers share the same Chorus fibre), mobile coverage genuinely differs between them. Choosing the wrong network for your usage patterns can mean poor signal at home, in your commute, or in rural areas you visit frequently.
Best rural coverage: Spark (or Skinny — same network)
Best 5G urban coverage: One NZ
Best value for most households: 2degrees (or Skinny for Spark network budget)
Best for budget: Skinny Mobile (Spark network, cheapest plans)
Coverage Comparison
Coverage is the primary reason to choose one network over another. Before comparing price, confirm which networks work well at your home, workplace, and the rural areas you visit.
How to check coverage:
- Spark coverage map: spark.co.nz/coverage
- One NZ coverage map: one.nz/coverage
- 2degrees coverage map: 2degrees.co.nz/coverage
These maps show 4G and 5G coverage by address. They’re directionally accurate but may be optimistic in fringe areas — user reports are also worth checking.
Rural Coverage
Spark has historically had the most extensive rural coverage, particularly in isolated areas, back-country routes, and remote coastal areas. Their large network investment has resulted in coverage in many areas the other two networks don’t reach.
2degrees has invested heavily in rural coverage through RBI (Rural Broadband Initiative) contracts with the government. They now have comparable coverage to Spark in many regional towns and farming areas, and are closing the gap in more remote areas.
One NZ has strong urban and suburban coverage and good regional coverage, but historically less reach in remote rural areas than Spark and 2degrees.
Verdict for rural: Spark (or Skinny as a cheaper alternative on the same network). 2degrees is a strong second.
Urban and 5G Coverage
One NZ has been the most aggressive 5G deployer in NZ. Their 5G coverage in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch is extensive, and their 5G speeds are fast (300–800+ Mbps in good coverage zones).
Spark also has good 5G deployment in major cities. Comparable to One NZ in most urban areas.
2degrees has 5G in major centres but their rollout has been slightly slower than the other two. Good urban coverage overall.
Verdict for 5G in major cities: One NZ or Spark. For most users, 5G speeds are well in excess of what’s needed — the 4G LTE available from all three networks is fast enough for anything most people do on a phone.
Price Comparison
2degrees and Skinny Mobile (Spark network) consistently offer the most data per dollar.
| Plan budget | Best value provider | Typical data |
|---|---|---|
| $16–$20/month | Skinny Mobile | 1.5–3GB |
| $25–$30/month | Skinny or 2degrees | 5–10GB |
| $40–$50/month | 2degrees | 20–40GB |
| $60+/month | 2degrees or One NZ | 50–100GB |
Spark tends to be the most expensive for similar data allowances. For the same coverage (using Skinny on the Spark network), you can usually save $15–$30/month.
Which Network for Specific Situations
| Situation | Recommended network |
|---|---|
| Live and work in Auckland/Wellington/Christchurch | Any (all similar) — choose on price |
| Frequently drive rural highways | Spark (or Skinny) |
| Work on a farm or rural property | Spark or 2degrees — check your specific area |
| Want cheapest possible plan | Skinny Mobile (Spark network) |
| Want best 5G in city | One NZ |
| Want best data value | 2degrees |
| Existing broadband with a provider | Check if they offer mobile bundle |
MVNOs: Getting a Major Network at a Lower Price
MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) use a major network’s infrastructure but sell plans at lower prices by operating with lower overhead.
| MVNO | Uses network | Typical saving |
|---|---|---|
| Skinny Mobile | Spark | $15–$30/month cheaper |
| Warehouse Mobile | 2degrees | $5–$15/month cheaper |
| Kiwi Mobile | 2degrees | Similar pricing |
Skinny is the most significant MVNO in NZ and offers the biggest saving for Spark network users. Before choosing Spark directly, always check if Skinny’s equivalent plan is suitable — it uses the exact same towers.
