Salaries in NZ are quoted annually, but pay is received weekly, fortnightly, or monthly. The conversions are not always intuitive — particularly the difference between monthly and fortnightly pay, and the “5-paycheck month” effect for weekly earners.
To convert: Annual ÷ 52 = weekly. Annual ÷ 26 = fortnightly. Annual ÷ 12 = monthly. Note: fortnightly pay is NOT double your weekly pay when comparing to monthly. A $75,000 salary is $1,442/week, $2,885/fortnight, or $6,250/month (gross, before tax).

Convert Your Pay
Why Fortnightly ≠ Monthly × 2
This is the most common pay conversion confusion. Here’s why:
| Pay Period | Periods Per Year |
|---|---|
| Weekly | 52 |
| Fortnightly | 26 |
| Monthly | 12 |
52 weeks ÷ 2 = 26 fortnights. But 12 months × 2 = 24, not 26.
This means there are 2 extra fortnights per year compared to 24 half-months. In practical terms: fortnightly earners receive 2 “bonus” pay periods per year that don’t align with a monthly equivalent.
For a $75,000 salary:
- Monthly: $6,250/month × 12 = $75,000
- Fortnightly: $2,885/fortnight × 26 = $75,000
But if you compare 2 × monthly vs 1 × fortnightly: $12,500 vs $2,885 — they’re different because the fortnightly calculation divides by 26, not 24.
The 5-Pay-Period Month (Weekly Earners)
Weekly earners have 52 pay dates per year across 12 months. Since 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33, most months have 4 pay periods but approximately 4–5 months per year have 5 pay periods.
In a 5-paycheck month, your total monthly income is 25% higher than a 4-paycheck month — but your fixed costs (rent, subscriptions, loan payments) remain the same. This is a “bonus” that savvy budgeters put straight into savings.
