Government Benefit Payment Dates New Zealand 2026

Updated

New Zealand government benefits are paid on a fortnightly schedule for most Work and Income payments, weekly for some, and tax-credit-style for others. Missing a payment date or expecting money that hasn’t arrived can cause real hardship — this guide explains when each payment is made and what to do if yours is late.

Quick answer

Most Work and Income benefits (Jobseeker, NZ Super, Sole Parent Support, Supported Living) are paid fortnightly on a Tuesday. Your specific payment day depends on your case number — some clients are paid Wednesday or Thursday. Working for Families tax credits are paid weekly by IRD. Best Start is paid fortnightly by IRD.

How NZ Benefit Payments Are Scheduled

Work and Income does not pay all clients on the same day. Your payment day is assigned when your benefit is set up — usually a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. The specific date rotates fortnightly.

To find your exact payment dates:

  • Log in to MyMSD (my.msd.govt.nz) — the Work and Income client portal
  • Call 0800 559 009 (Work and Income)
  • Check your original benefit setup letter

NZ Super Payment Dates 2026

NZ Super is paid fortnightly, usually on Tuesdays. Payment is made directly to your nominated bank account.

Jobseeker Support Payment Dates

Same fortnightly Tuesday schedule as NZ Super. Your specific fortnight depends on your case — it may be offset by one week from the NZ Super schedule shown above. Check MyMSD for your exact dates.

Working for Families — Payment Dates

Working for Families tax credits (Family Tax Credit, In-Work Tax Credit, Minimum Family Tax Credit) are administered by IRD, not Work and Income.

  • Weekly payments: Most WFF recipients receive weekly direct credits (typically on a Wednesday or Thursday)
  • Lump sum at tax time: Some families receive WFF as an annual lump sum via their tax return — this is usually less advantageous; switching to weekly payments is usually better for cashflow

To update your Working for Families payment schedule, log in to myIR at ird.govt.nz.

Best Start Payment Dates

Best Start ($73/week) is paid by IRD fortnightly, directly to the primary carer’s bank account. Payments start after you apply and provide your baby’s IRD number.

Paid Parental Leave is administered by IRD:

  • Payments are made weekly directly to the primary carer’s bank account
  • Payments begin after IRD processes your application (allow 2–3 weeks from application)
  • You set your own start date (up to 6 weeks before the due date, or any time after birth)

Winter Energy Payment Dates 2026

The Winter Energy Payment is an automatic top-up to NZ Super and core benefits during winter. It requires no application.

What to Do If a Payment Is Late

  1. Check MyMSD — confirm your expected payment date and bank account details
  2. Check your bank — allow until end of business day (5pm) before reporting a missing payment
  3. Call Work and Income: 0800 559 009 (Mon–Fri 7am–6pm, Sat 8am–1pm)
  4. For IRD payments (WFF, Best Start, PPL): Call 0800 227 773 or message via myIR

Most late payments resolve within 1–2 business days. If you have a genuine cashflow emergency, Work and Income can issue an emergency benefit advance — repaid from future payments.
